Michu reminds me of Bergkamp... Wenger praises Swansea star (and former transfer target) with comparison to Arsenal legend
Arsene Wenger has paid the ultimate accolade to Michu by likening the Swansea crowd favourite to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.Arsenal travel to the Liberty Stadium for Saturday's late kick-off and Wenger is acutely aware that Michu is a player well capable of ending their record run which has brought 11 consecutive wins on the road.
Extolling the virtues of Michu - the Spaniard has already hit five goals for Swansea this season in all competitions - Wenger said: ‘I see him like a little bit, position-wise, like a Bergkamp, more than an up-front striker.
Quite a compliment: Arsene Wenger has compared Michu to the legendary Dennis Bergkamp
Thanks for the memories: Bergkamp retired in 2006 as one of the Premier League's all-time greatest players
‘They can play with both [strikers] because Michu’s the kind of striker who is a midfielder as well. He can play both positions, that's why they are 4-4-1-1 or you can call that a 4-4-2 when Wilfried Bony plays.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Michu in the summer, following his outstanding debut season in the Premier League which showed him to be one of the best bargain signings of recent years after Michael Laudrup snapped him up from Rayo Vallecano for just £2million.
Swansea are unwilling to part with their star attraction for anything less than £20m, such has been his impact. But Wenger is adamant that Arsenal now have the financial clout to compete for hot properties having finally loosened the purse strings to land Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for a club record £42.5m.
Plenty to say: Arsene Wenger speaks at his press conference on Friday morning
But Aaron Ramsey is expected to shake off a thigh problem while Mathieu Flamini is also expected to start despite carrying a minor shoulder issue.
